Welcome to The High Line... June 8, 2010 marks the one year anniversary of its grand re-opening, and this photo essay is a celebration of this amazing urban park in New York City. Part owned by the City, the idea for The High Line was born when local residents Joshua David and Robert Hammond discovered the line was under threat of demolition. They founded The Friends of the High Line and worked with the City to create a new public space for New Yorkers. As community support for this public redevelopment grew, the City funding was finally allocated in 2004. Michael Bloomberg, the Mayor of New York City, was an important supporter of the project. On the design of The High Line:Designed as a collaboration between James Corner Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, they used a strategy of ‘agri-tecture’—part agriculture, part architecture. Construction began in 2006 with the removal of all surface materials, which were sandblasted, repaired and replaced where necessary.
