Seen in today's entry is an overlook of the fishing village of Portofino. This is the third image in the series, the first two of which were posted here and here.

I captured this shot from a beautiful overlook above the village. It took about ten to fifteen minutes of walking to get there, and I had to wait for some tourists to flee before I found the perfect spot to capture this shot.

Portofino is home to some of the most expensive yachts in the world, and a few of them may be seen docked in this scene. One of the frequent visitors to Portofino is Lady Sheridan, a 190 foot beauty you can rent for a cool €329,000 in the summer months. Another frequent visitor is Lady Lola, which costs around $400,000 to rent for a week. A smaller yacht I saw docked in Portofino was the Mangusta 130.

As I mentioned in yesterday's entry, this image took a lot of time to finally post on Erudite Expressions. Let me explain.

This image is actually a single exposure, captured at f/14 for fifteen seconds. You can tell this was a long exposure for all the trails you see in the water: boats moving in and out of the small Portofino harbor.

To achieve such a long exposure, I used a B+W three stop neutral density filter. While I was capturing this scene, I was actually shooting for a long exposure high dynamic range image, which I thought would be simple to post-process. But after importing the images I captured and going through numerous iterations of the HDR image, I decided that I couldn't create something amazing out of it. I actually thought that I would end up posting the HDR result eventually (I had post-processed numerous HDRs of this scene, but never posted the result, because I wasn't particularly happy with the outcome). But then I realized that I could do a good job with a single exposure, so I tried working with a few versions. I asked myself: Is it best to post-process a -2 EV exposure, a + 0 EV, or a + 2 EV exposure? Turns out I post-processed all of them a bit differently, but the -2 EV exposure produced too much noise in the final version, and the highlights were badly clipped in the +2 EV exposure. So the image you see here is post-processed from a +0 EV exposure.

I am still not convinced that this is the best I have done in post-processing this image. Therefore, I might post a slightly different version of this image sometime in the future.

News and Updates:

(1) The charity print auction for one of my images ended last night. The highest bid came from Malia for $30, but she generously gave much more than her bid amount to Partners in Health (her print is on the way to being processed and shipped). I am not running any more auctions to benefit Haiti, but I do encourage you to check out my prints sale which is ongoing until January 31 (with 50% of sale going to the charity of your choice). Also, I do encourage you to check out what other images are available in the Charity Prints Auction pool, since the cooperative effort is ongoing until February 14.

(2) I contributed two of my images to another worthy project, Images without Borders. There are two hundred images from excellent contributors, and each image is priced at $50 or $100 (depending on the print size you order). I won't point you directly to which images I contributed, as I want you to explore the gallery.

Thanks for reading.
