Seen in today's entry is the picturesque Bavarian town of Schönau am Königsee. The town is situated at the northern end of the Königssee lake, the third deepest lake in Germany.

To make it here, we took a small country road from Salzburg (Austria), passing through a beautiful view of the Bavarian countryside along the way.

Lake Königssee, on which Schönau am Königsee is situated, is perhaps the highlight of the Berchtesgaden National Park. The lake is 190 meters deep and almost eight kilometers long. It is also Germany's cleanest and highest (in elevation) lake. Mountains surround the lake on all sides. It is incredibly beautiful.

Regarding Schönau am Königsee as a destination to visit: I wasn't originally intending on visiting this town. I knew I wanted to explore the smaller towns in Bavaria, but I was thinking more about visiting Berchtesgaden. However, after researching more about the municipalities part of the Berchtesgadener Land, Schönau quickly made it to my list of places I had to see (can you guess why?). Take a look at this Google Map to give you an idea where Schönau is situated. If you take a look at this zoomed out map, you'll notice the Austrian town of Hallein northeast of Schönau. I previously featured images from Hallein here and here (for a complete gallery of my images from Austria, see here).

I'll be posting more images from Schönau am Königsee and other Bavarian municipalities the rest of this week and next week as well. Schönau am Königsee is perhaps best known for those boat houses seen in the distance of this image, and I'll post at least one close-up image of the boat house. I'll also post images from the other side of the lake. And most notably, in the upcoming posts, I'll talk about the experience (similar to the one described here) I had while I was there.

Note: my growing gallery of images from Germany is here.
