The Louvre Museum has been in the news recently, so I thought I would post a relevant picture.

In perhaps the most shocking revelation about the Louvre since The Da Vinci Code, the fast food restaurant McDonalds has announced plans to open up a store at the Louvre next month. According to sources, McDonald's is celebrating thirty years in France this year, and what better way to celebrate than to open up the store inside the most visited museum in the world? The store will be located in the Carrousel du Louvre, the underground approach to the museum. Believe it or not, it will be the 1,142nd McDonald's store to open in France. According to the Associated Press, France is McDonald's top market outside the United States.

I captured the image (it is a high dynamic range image) seen in today's entry from inside the Louvre Museum, looking outward from one of the open windows. At center stands the famous Louvre Pyramid, commissioned in 1984 by then French president François Mitterrand. The Louvre Pyramid was designed by the Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming (I.M.) Pei. The Pyramid stands 71 feet high, and the steel construction supports 603 diamond-shaped and 70 triangular panes of 21 mm thick glass.

The other relevant news to the Louvre is that he 92-year-old I.M. Pei was announced today as the recipient of the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). According to The Independent:
Best known for creating the glass pyramid at the Louvre museum in Paris, Ieoh Ming Pei is a role model to many architects and designers, as he is to David Adjaje (on the honors committee of the Royal Institute of British Architects) who nominated him for the award: 'I remember as a young student first visiting the Louvre in Paris and marvelling at its extraordinary ability to unify and modernise what was a much loved but disparate institution, and beholding its magnificent, gravity defying, glass pyramid,' he said, following the RIBA's decision announced October 6.
