Seen in this image is a scene I captured more than two hours prior to the kick-off of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Clemson Tigers football game last Thursday. I profiled one picture from the game here, but this is one of the few other shots from the entire night that turned out to be a keeper (i.e., worth posting). Seen in the center of the frame is the famous Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech, a 1930 Ford Model A Sports coupe. The Ramblin' Wreck is most notable for its entry into Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field, which the football team enthusiastically follows; this tradition has been in force since 1961.

I captured this shot with the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS lens at f/2.8 for 1/1250 seconds. Post-processing was in Adobe Lightroom where I did the basic adjustments and then carried over to Adobe Photoshop CS3, where I used several different layer masks to bring out certain features of the photo (the two yellow jacket stickers on the front of the car, selective sharpening for the grill of the Ramblin' Wreck, and some other additions). A key step involved working in LAB mode, whereby I was able to increase the overall contrast of the image. I think what makes this image so strong is the framing: I love how the students from Georgia Tech's band flank both sides of the Wreck. The golden evening light in the distance makes it appear as though the Ramblin' Wreck is coming out of some magical, ethereal forest. Or at least that's the impression I get when I look at this photo. What do you see?

According to Georgia Tech's student newspaper, The Technique:
The term 'Ramblin' Wreck' has been used to refer to students and alumni of Georgia Tech much longer than the eponymous car. The expression has its origins in the late 19th century and was used originally to refer to the makeshift motorized vehicles constructed by Georgia Tech engineers employed in projects in the jungles of South America. The Wrecks were constructed from whatever the engineers could find—mostly old tractor and automotive parts—and were kept running by the engineers' ingenuity and creativity. Other workers in the area began to refer to these vehicles and the men who drove them as 'Rambling Wrecks from Georgia Tech.'
The term has stuck, and the Ramblin' Wreck is now one of the official mascots of Georgia Tech (the other being the lovable Buzz).

Here are the lyrics to Georgia Tech's official fight song, “Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech”:
I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech, and a hell of an Engineer
A Helluva, Helluva, Helluva, Helluva, Helluva Engineer
Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear.
I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an Engineer

Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I'd dress her in white and gold,
And put her on the campus To cheer the brave and bold.
But if I had a son, sir, I'll tell you what he'd do--
He'd yell: 'To Hell with Georgia!' Like his daddy used to do.

Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum, and Sugar three thousand pounds
A college bell to put it in, And a clapper to stir it round.
I'd drink to all the good fellows, who come from far and near.
I'm a Ramblin', Gamblin', Hell of an Engineer!
Go Jackets!
