During my visit to New York City this summer, I met up with one of my good friends, Rebecca.

Rebecca asked whether she could bring along her dog, Wilbur, and of course I said that it was fine. We planned on getting dinner at one of the restaurants in Manhattan, and I told her that I'll bring along the camera to capture some shots of her and Wilbur. The challenge was finding a restaurant (we met up in the Upper West Side of Manhattan) that would cater to Wilbur. We passed three or four restaurants that only allowed the dogs to be tied outside of the restaurant, which was a no-go. We finally settled on a restaurant on Amsterdam Street called Bettola. There was a nice outdoor seating area, so Wilbur could be safe and comfortable next to his owner.

After dinner, as we stepped away from the restaurant, Rebecca stopped and pointed out the comedian Jackie Mason eating at an adjacent restaurant. That was an interesting sighting. I took out my Canon 5D, attached the Canon 100mm macro, and captured a photo of Jackie Mason. I don't think he was too pleased I was taking his photo while he was eating his dinner, but I digress.

Our next destination was the Jacques Torres store on Amsterdam Street. Rebecca said that they had 'the best chocolate cookies ever,' and after trying out their specialty, I wouldn't disagree (the cookies were really amazing indeed).

Our last stop was Riverside Park. On the way there, I captured the image you see in today's entry. Contrary to popular belief, there are quiet and peaceful areas in Manhattan. I like how Wilbur turned around for the camera in this capture (he's chewing on his bone). Isn't he cute? Rebecca entered Wilbur into the cutest dog competition, and you can vote for Wilbur here.

After we got to the park, it was nice to sit on the bench, watch the sun set, and look at the Hudson River. Riverside Park has a so-called 'dog run,' in which dogs can, well, run. Wilbur did some running around and met some friends. Rebecca and I talked about books. She recently recommended that I read Eric Weiner's The Geography of Bliss, and I finished reading it yesterday. It was one of the most interesting (not to mention hilarious) books I've read this year, not least because I enjoy traveling so much. I would talk more about the book in this post, but I think a summary is more appropriate in a separate entry. I've created a special page on books I read (it's empty right now), which I hope to update in the next few weeks. I've always wanted to talk about the books I read, but I didn't know how to integrate my reading habits with the posting of images on Erudite Expressions. I then had a revelation that I could create separate pages on the photoblog (such as the about page, hire me page, etc.) for special purposes.

Thanks Rebecca for meeting up with me in Manhattan! As I told Rebecca, I would love to live in New York City if only I could find a job there. But that's a subject for another post.
