The Grand Canal of Versailles is one of those sights that boggles the mind. It is, in a word, grand (how appropriate, right?). When I first laid my eyes on it, I was mesmerized. Here was this beautiful canal that stretches way into the distance. Standing from the top, I couldn't gauge its length exactly. So I started walking. And walking. And walking. After ten minutes, I was maybe half way to its end. Turns out that the Grand Canal is one mile in length (and the entire length from the beginning of the Palace to the end of the Canal is more than two kilometers in length).

I turned back around as the sun was setting in the distance. I wanted to capture a photograph of the scene, with most of the Grand Canal visible. As I started traversing back to the entrance of Versailles, I captured the image you see in today's entry. While it doesn't show you the scale of the Canal in its entirety, I think it's a more impactful image than the ones I captured in front of the Canal (which I might post in a future entry).

The way the light filtered through the clouds and reflected on the water is what moved me most about the scene. The lone duck in the center of the frame adds a sense of peace and tranquility, I think. One of the major reasons I travel is to surround myself in scenes like this. Why do you travel?

I posted two other images from Versailles here and here. If you read the caption behind those entries, you will find a way to enter the latest free prints giveaway.

Does this image move you? I ask because that is the question behind the latest free prints giveaway. Feel free to enter the contest by leaving a comment.
