I was thinking about Prague today, and I asked myself whether I'd be able to post a picture I captured in that lovely city for today's post.

So I went through my Prague archives and found this one. I captured it on my walk around the town (that evening I set out with my camera gear and tripod to capture some images which I would assemble into high dynamic range images in the future). For this shot I sat down and lowered my camera to almost ground level. As such, the point of view is drastically different from all my other shots I captured in Prague.

While the major roads in Prague are well-paved, most of the smaller streets are made of cobblestone (also known as setts, or rectangular paving blocks made of stone) and/or brick. In a way, the image in today's entry is quintessential Prague (which you absolutely cannot miss if you go there).

Two interesting things to notice about this picture. First, the two leaves in the center of the frame, which appear to be embracing (if I had done a tighter crop, I could have titled this image to appropriately reflect this scene). Second, if you glance at the bottom of the image and then slowly move your eyes toward the center, it will appear that the cobblestones are actually steps, leading you down. And while it is true that the road is uneven, I think this illusory effect is manifested primarily because of the low vantage point from which this image was captured.

Did you notice that yesterday's post was glancing up, while today's is glancing down?

Interesting diversion of the day: if you're a fan of illusions, this one is amazing. Did you know that your perception of male vs. female faces may be subjective? In particular, if one changes the contrast in certain situations, your brain may be fooled. Check this out for yourself here.

Tomorrow's entry will be my 1,200th post on Erudite Expressions!
