Sometimes, you just have to glance up.

As I was walking around Hallein (a city in Austria), I glanced up and saw this really cool view. If you're curious, I mentioned how I made it to Hallein in this previous post.

The image in today's entry was captured about ten yards away from this one.

And since I haven't done this in a while, I figure today's image is a good candidate to describe some of the post-processing that I carried out to get the final result, starting from the original file. The image in today's entry was processed as a high dynamic range image from a single RAW exposure. Some of the things I did in post-processing include adding blue saturation to the sky, removing some of the blown highlights in the sky and part of the orange paint, removing dust and other unsightly elements (see bottom right, for example), and selectively dodging/burning the colours in the windows.

You can see the original RAW file (re-sized and converted to a JPEG) here. As you can see, I also removed the reflection from the window (though I will admit that I need to re-work this cloning work, so I will come back to it in the future; I will most definitely do it if someone orders a print) and changed the hue of the curved stripe that goes above the door (which is more like a mini-tunnel) to better match the palate of the image as a whole. In the final steps, I overlaid a texture at about ten percent opacity (primary reason for using a texture: I hate when the sky in my landscape/cityscape images is blown out, and using a texture is my justification for having no parts of the image appear blown out) and used an unsharp mask in Photoshop to sharpen the final image. What do you think of the final result? How do you think it compares to the original?

If you like bold, vibrant, and saturated colours, then you might enjoy checking out the rest of the images in my HDR gallery.

A few announcements (repeated from yesterday):
1) The summer prints sale is ongoing until August 31, 2009.
2) You can vote for Erudite Expressions in the 2009 Photoblog Awards here.
3) In order to pay off my (rising) student loans (as well as my car), I am trying to book more weddings and portrait shoots. Find out more information, including my standard rates, here. If you want to help me out, I'd appreciate your recommendation if someone is looking for a wedding or portrait photographer.
