About two weeks ago, I mentioned that I participated in the second annual Scott Kelby photo walk. I participated in the New York photo walk (the name of our walk was Square Root of New York). Well, the reason I bring up this topic now is that Frank Veronsky, our group leader, picked out the winning photo (scroll down in this group page to see the winning entry). Alternatively, click here to see the winning photo.

The winning photo (titled 'Boys in the Park') was captured by sigmany in Washington Square Park. I am really happy that it was the photo selected as the winning entry. It shows great emotion, and there's so much going on in the photo. The boy on the right side of the frame appears to be in a full sprint, but what is grabbing my attention is the boy above him, who appears to be thrashing his arms wildly. And the boy to the left appears to have some water splashed on him, and he is trying to wipe his face. The winning photo is similar to the subject matter as mine, so I am curious what Frank was thinking in selecting the winning image (granted, I do think sigmany's photo is more dynamic and is well deserving of the win).

Also, I think the winning photo is well representative of our walk that day. It was a hot day in New York, and it felt so refreshing to come close to the fountain and cool off (droplets would go outside the fountain's bowl because of a light breeze). When submitting an image for the photo contest, there were three images that I thought about submitting: this one, this one, and the image in today's entry. In the end, I chose to submit the former two, as I thought they represented two disparate subjects, but also because I thought they were interesting. That's what makes a good photo I think: one that is visually interesting, but also one that is representative of an atmosphere (for example: a summer day in New York City).

For the image in today's entry, first notice the boy standing in the middle of the fountain; he is out of focus, but you can tell he is wearing red (pink?) swimming trunks. This is the same boy that also appears in the winning photo. We must have captured the two images minutes apart, though I do remember that boy hanging around the fountain for quite some time. And the man on whom I focused? I don't know his name (if you know who he is, leave a comment), nor am I totally certain of whom he was looking at when he smiled (I think it was his wife?). I just thought it was a nice candid moment, so I snapped a quick picture.

Washington Square Park is beautiful, especially in the summer (here's a cool photo which appeared in today's Wall Street Journal). I hope you agree. Thanks for looking!
