Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa is perhaps the most famous painting in the world. You study about the painting in art history, world history, and even in mathematics. Viting the Louvre and seeing the Mona Lisa in person was something I've been wanting to do for over ten years.

So that's what I did today. Once I was inside the Louvre, I followed the signs toward Mona Lisa (also known as La Gioconda). Located in the Salle des États in the Louvre, the painting is displayed in a specially built, climate-controlled enclosure behind bullet-proof glass. I captured the image seen in today's entry after spending about ten minutes in the pack of people to make my way to the front for a closer view (and to capture a photo, of course).

About six million people view the painting at the Louvre each year; here we have about fifty people trying to make their way forward for a better view.

Did you know? The Mona Lisa was stolen on August 21, 1911. Among those brought in for questioning was the painter Pablo Picasso (this was a lead-in clue to one of the quiz bowl questions about the Mona Lisa when I used to play on an academic team in high school).
