Seen in today's entry is a high dynamic range image of Belvedere Palace, which I visited today. The Belvedere is a baroque palace complex built by Prince Eugene of Savoy in the 3rd district of Vienna. The Palace house the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere museum.

The Belvedere consists of two buildings: the Upper Belvedere (seen in this image) and the Lower Belvedere (image forthcoming in a future photoblog entry). The Lower Belvedere was the residential palace of Prince Eugene and erected within a period of only two years. The architect was Lukas von Hildebrandt, alongside Fischer von Erlach, the greatest Austrian baroque architect. The Upper Belvedere (built from 1720 to 1723), on the other hand, was used mainly for purposes of prestige. The Marble Hall inside The Upper Belvedere set the stage for courtly occasions.

The Upper Belvedere houses an extensive collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day. At the heart of the displays of “art around 1900” is the world’s largest Gustav Klimt collection. My purpose for visiting this Museum was to see Klimt's most famous work, The Kiss. The Museum also has a fine collection of Expressionist and Impressionist works.
