![]() In yesterday's post, I mentioned that I am on my next travel adventure. I also mentioned that I won't be updating the photoblog until I return, but two things which I didn't mention which are pivotal in changing my mind are: I brought my MacBook Pro (which has Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop CS3, and Photomatix Pro on it) and that I have a reliable internet connection (at least for the first part of the trip). These two factors mean that I can capture images and post-process them while traveling. The first picture I am posting is the one I took from the train, on my way from Zurich to Vienna. I flew from Atlanta to Zurich, and we landed in Zurich at about 8AM local time. Going through passport control was a breeze. At the airport, I validated my Eurail train pass. I then proceeded to the main train station in Zurich (Zürich Hauptbahnhof or Zürich HB). I arrived to the train station at around 9:10AM, which meant I had plenty of time to make the 9:40AM train to Vienna, Austria. However, I decided to do some exploration of the surroundings, and I ended up going to an underground mall looking for a SIM card for my phone. My attempt at getting the phone to recognize the SIM card failed. I then took out my MacBook Pro and decided to check my email (I paid 6 CHF for one hour of internet access). Waiting for four hours at the train station was quite a long time, and I must have made four circles around the train station during this time. One of my other stops was at a grocery store from which I wanted to buy water. I found a 1.5L bottle of water for 3 CHF, but when I tried paying for it with my credit card, the transaction didn't go through for some reason. I didn't know what to do, until I asked the cashier if they took euros. She said yes, and I handed her a five euro note. She gave me four CHF in return, which meant that I received an exchange rate of 1.4 CHF to 1 euro (less than the going rate of 1.52 CHF to 1 euro). At 1:30PM, I made it to platform seven, where the train going to Vienna, Austria would arrive promptly at 1:40PM. We departed at approximately 1:47PM. The trip to Vienna was quite picturesque, especially as we approached Innsbruck, with mountains on both side of the city. The picture in today's entry was captured at around 7PM, as we approached toward Salzburg, Austria. After more than nine hours of travel by train (and approximately 24 hours after beginning the trip in ATL), I finally made it to Vienna, Austria. |
