Seen in today's entry is the Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid, Spain. The cathedral-like building at the center of this Plaza was built by Antonio Palacios between 1905 and 1917. This impressive building was home to the Postal and Telegraphic Museum until 2007. In 2007, the Communications Palace (Palacio de las Comunicaciones) became Madrid's official city hall (Madrid Mayor's Office).

On the right side of the frame you can see the Cibeles fountain, which was built during the reign of Charles (Carlos) III and designed by Ventura Rodríguez between 1777 and 1782. The fountain depicts the goddess Cibeles (Cybele), the Phrygian goddess of fertility (also known as 'Earth Mother,' the goddess of nature and wild animals). Cybele is sitting on a chariot and being pulled by two lions. Interestingly, the fountain of Cibeles has been adopted by the football team Real Madrid as the place to celebrate its victories.

About the photo: this was a single capture on the Canon 5D + Canon 17-40 f/4L lens at f/20 for 2.5 seconds. It was still daytime outside, and I wanted to get a long exposure shot of this scene. To help with the long exposure, I used a three stop density filter, as described in this previous post. Post-processing was achieved in Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop CS3, with the primary editing done in LAB colour mode. The final presentation of the image is in a 2x1 crop.

Free Print Giveaway, Day 1:
As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I have six prints which I am giving away for free in the next week or so. To read all the details (and the two restrictions), please check out this post.

To win the free print today, all you have to do is answer the following question correctly: What is the complete name of the park in which my image of 'The Mermaid' was captured? You may find the image in my archives.

For this contest giveaway, it's about two things: speed and being correct in your answer. The first person to leave a comment with the correct answer in the entry where the image of the Mermaid was posted wins a free 4'x6' print. Note: the answer should be easy if you've been reading the captions of my posts recently.

If you don't win today, check back tomorrow and in the coming days, as I will have five more of these mini-contests for you to win a free print. At least one of the contests will utilize a random number generator from random.org, and at least one contest will involve a message I post via twitter (so it may help to follow me here).
