I came across this really cool fountain in Savona, a small commune in the northern Italian region of Liguria. I only had a few hours to explore this quaint city (one of my stops was an awesome gelateria), but I made the most of my time by following a map.

This image is a high dynamic range image, comprised of three exposures.

The neatest thing about the result is that I captured the three images which made up the HDR during broad daylight (capture time was around 2:30PM local time). I knew I wanted to photograph the fountain whereby the water would be blurred. But shooting at minimum aperture (f/32) would still yield shutter speeds that were not fast enough to create the silky smooth water, as you see in today's entry.

This is when I took out my three stop neutral density filter and attached it to my Canon 17-40 f/4L lens. With the three stop neutral density filter attached to the lens, I was able to reduce the amount of light hitting the Canon 5D sensor's by a factor of 1000. The three exposures used for the high dynamic range image had exposure times of two, eight, and thirty seconds.

If I am not mistaken, this is my second entry posting a high dynamic range image in which I used the neutral density filter to achieve the final result (the other HDR image in which I used the three stop neutral density filter is 'The Sea Cauldron,' found here). I still have one or two HDR images which I will post sometime in the future that utilize the long exposure approach during daytime (with the help of the three stop neutral density filter).

I am usually good at recording the places which I visit, but I have misplaced the map on which I scribbled the sights I photographed in Savona.
