![]() Over the last two weeks or so, I've been posting some seascapes of the Mediterranean Sea. Today's entry builds on the series, which began with a splash (click here). Then I mentioned how an approaching storm was visible in the distance, and that was my last entry for 2008 (click here to see it). The most recent entry profiling this storm was a high dynamic range image, which I posted here. The image in today's entry was captured about ten minutes before this one (link). When I was walking around Caesarea with my camera and other gear, at one point I remembered that I brought along my three-stop neutral density (ND) filter. Without hesitation, I attached the filter to my Canon 17-40 f/4L lens and positioned the Canon 5D + Canon 17/40 f4/L with the filter on the rocks seen in the foreground of today's entry. Initially, I had no idea which settings to use to get a decent exposure. In order to capture the image, I had to shoot on fully manual exposure (set distance to infinity on the lens), estimate the proper aperture, and then set the appropriate shutter speed. In the end, the image in today's entry was one of the two that worked out (I will post the other image in a future entry). It is a thirty second exposure at f/10. Post-processing was achieved in Photomatix Pro, then in Adobe Lightroom, then in Adobe Photoshop CS3 (conversion from RGB mode to LAB colour mode + channel mixer + selective colour + shadows/highlights + adjustment layers for the sky and foreground + minor dodging/burning + minor cloning + minor rotation), and then brought back into Adobe Lightroom for the final tweaking. I like the final result because the final image is peaceful yet moody, dark yet filled with light. To me, the contrast of the silky smooth water against the menacing clouds, moving away in the distance, is rather striking. As always, I'd be interested to hear what you think (about this entry and the entire series on this awesome Mediterranean storm). |
