![]() Seen in today's entry is the view in the opposite direction from yesterday's entry. We are looking at the ancient port of Jaffa (also spelled as Yaffa or Yafo; in Arabic: يَافَا,; in Hebrew: יָפוֹ). How old is Jaffa? Archaeological evidence shows that Jaffa was inhabited about 7,500 years before the Common era (BCE). Jaffa's natural harbor has been in use since the Bronze Age. In today's entry, we are looking at Jaffa Hill, which rises to a height of 40 meters (130 feet) and offers a breathtaking view of the coastline (and of Tel Aviv in the distance). In 1954, Yafo became part of the municipality of Tel Aviv. In fact, the cities of Tel Aviv and Yafo are commonly listed together as Tel Aviv-Yafo. Today, Yafo is an amalgamation of the old and the new: parts of the Old City have been restored, and one can visit art galleries, theaters, restaurants, and numerous souvenir shops while in Yafo. |
