The previous night we drove south deep into the Negev desert. The origin of the word Negev is from the Hebrew root meaning 'dry'. In the Bible the word Negev is also used for the direction 'south'. So we traveled south and wound up in a very dry area of Israel - quite fitting.

The Negev covers approximately 13,000 km² (4,700 square miles) of land, which is roughly 55% of Israel's total land area. The image seen in today's entry gives you an idea of the Negev - brown, rocky, dusty mountains interspersed with craters and sparse vegetation.
