![]() Today's picture is meant to be a metaphor for today's 2008 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony. Today, 08/08/08, the doors were opened to thousands of athletes and billions of viewers all over the world for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad. Did you watch the Opening Ceremony? It was absolutely amazing. About fifteen thousand performers were involved in a ceremony that continued into the next day. The choreography was absolutely incredible. I particularly enjoyed the giant scroll transforming into a fluid array of movable type blocks that form three variations of the character 和 (Chinese for harmony), the performers in yellow costume forming the shape of Beijing National Stadium (also known as 'The Nest'), and the 2008 Tai Chi performers who were able to form perfect circles in their movements around the stadium. Some numbers about the Opening Ceremony: * $100 million - a very conservative estimate for the cost of the Opening Ceremony. That's about $476,000 per minute and almost $8,000 per second and more than three times the cost of the 2004 Athens opening ceremony. * 91,000 - the number of spectators at National Stadium * 35,000 - the number of fireworks set off during the ceremony * 2,583 - the number of lights used during the show, drawing 6,440 kilowatts * 100 - approximately the number of heads of state/government who attended the Opening Ceremony |
