As I was walking around Barcelona on a relatively small street away from La Rambla, I noticed the ceiling seen in today's entry from quite a distance away. I quickly scampered closer, trying to figure out the best way to photograph the sight in front of me (actually, above me). I have one shot of this ceiling from a distance, which I am working on converting to a dramatic B&W image to be posted later. Today's image, by contrast, is an HDR. It was captured with me pointing my Canon 5D (attached to the Canon 17-40 f/4L lens) straight up. Note the windows on the top and bottom of the frame, giving you an idea of the perspective. I must have looked quite strange standing in the middle of the street, pointing my camera above me, with many passersby glancing my way (and having to walk around me). I did notice, however, that after I captured this image, other people started photographing the ceiling the same way. Hooray for inspiration.

After tone-mapping the image in Photomatix Pro, I imported it to Adobe Lightroom for some adjustments. Major work, however, was carried out in Photoshop CS3, where I performed dodging and burning, removed wide angle lens distortion, and performed a series of masked curves.

This image contains a lot of detail, and such, it is meant to be seen large (or in a print). If you want to see a larger version (1500x1500 pixels), you can e-mail me at elbelbelb2000[at]gmail[dot]com, and I'll send it your way (provided you don't host the image on another server). This image is listed as available for purchase; however, the size is non-standard (i.e., it is a 1:1 crop).

A few thoughts I've had recently:

1) Not enough people are buying prints. I'll mention a different type of sale on this photoblog next week.
2) I am not reading enough books. I am going to spend $100 (a nice number which should allow for between seven and twelve books) on amazon.com in the next few days. If you have book suggestions for me, send them by e-mail or leave a comment here.
3) I need to get better at B&W conversions. I also need to work on envisioning which images would look better in B&W.
4) I am debating on whether to upgrade to Adobe Lightroom 2.0 (though I did download a free trial version, and I played around with the beta for some time).
5) The Summer Olympics begin tomorrow, and I am very excited!
