The last day of the tour with Globus was today. Today we traveled from Seville to Madrid (about 350 miles in distance). On the way to Madrid, we stopped in Córdoba, another city in Andalucía.

The highlight in Córdoba was the tour of the Mezquita (Spanish for 'mosque'). The Mezquita is a Roman Catholic cathedral and a former Mosque. Construction of the Mosque began in 784 AD, and it took more than two hundred years to complete. Under the rule of Islam, it was built as the second-largest mosque in the world, and the Mosque is perhaps the most accomplished monument of the Umayyad dynasty of Córdoba. In the 10th century, Córdoba was one of the largest, most prosperous cities of Europe, outshining Byzantium and Baghdad in science, culture, and the arts. The development of the Great Mosque paralleled these new heights of achievement and grandeur.

However, in 1236, Cordoba was recaptured from the Muslim army by King Ferdinand III of Castile and the mosque was reconsecrated a Christian church. Alfonso X oversaw the construction of the Villaviciosa Chapel and the Royal Chapel within the structure of the mosque. The Spanish kings who followed added further Christian features, such as the new chapel built by Enrique II.

The Mezquita is most notable for its giant arches; the Mezquita has over 1,000 columns made of jasper, onyx, marble, and granite. These arches, which can be seen in today's image, were made from pieces of the Roman temple which had occupied the site in the past, as well as other destroyed Roman buildings. It is quite interesting to see the different sections of the Mezquita, as one can traverse from the Muslim Temple to the Christian Cathedral in a few hundred feet.
