This morning, we departed from Madrid toward Toledo. Located about 70 kilometers south of Madrid, Toledo is the capital of the province of Toledo and of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. Toledo was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage as one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire and place of coexistence of Christian, Jewish, and Moorish cultures.

Prior to exploring the city with a local guide, we stopped for fifteen minutes to take pictures of Toledo. This is an HDR image of Toledo, which shows the entire city on a mountaintop, with the Tagus River surrounding the city on three sides. The prominent building on the right of the image is the Alcázar of Toledo; it is a stone fortification located in the highest part of Toledo, and it was once used as a Roman palace in the 3rd century.

Thanks to Hannah for pointing out the location for this shot (I was photographing from a point which obscured part of the scene).
