Today we woke up early to go on our first tour. We first visited Madrid's Plaza de España, which features a monument to Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. The monument includes a stone sculpture of Cervantes, which overlooks bronze sculptures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. I think it is a popular stop with tourists because one can easily climb on the Don Quixote's horse or Sancho Panza's donkey (which I did).

The highlight of the day, however, was visiting the Prado Museum. I think it is one of the best art museums in the world, on par with the Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. There was no photography allowed inside the Prado, but I was sneaky and came away with a few shots anyway (to be posted in the future on this photoblog).

There was also an optional excursion to El Escorial, which I decided to visit. The Escorial owes its existence to a vow made by Philip II of Spain (1556-1598), shortly after the battle of St. Quentin, in which his forces succeeded in routing the army of France. The day of the victory, the 10th of August 1557, was sacred to St. Laurence; accordingly the building was dedicated to that saint, and received the title of El real monasterio de San Lorenzo del Escorial. Featured in today's entry is an HDR image of Escorial's Court of the Kings. I will post a more detailed description about the Escorial in a future entry on this photoblog.
