![]() The last port of call for the cruise was in Palma, a large city on the island of Majorca and the capital city of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands in Spain. After getting off the ship, I saw a massive line of people head for the buses to get to the center of town. Deciding not to wait in line, I decided to walk instead. I was carrying all of my camera gear, in one hundred degree heat, for about five kilometers before I reached La Seu, the cathedral seen in today's entry. The story behind the construction of the Cathedral is that in 1229 James I was returning to Mallorca with his troops in order to recapture the island. On the way to the island, they ran into a terrible storm. Fearing for the lives of himself and his troops, James I vowed to build a church in honour of the Virgin Mary if they survived. Although he laid the foundation stone in 1229, construction of the Cathedral continued until 1601. Work had to resume in 1851 when an earthquake destroyed the west front. More touches were added this century by the Catalan architeat, Antoni Gaudi. The Cathedral in Palma is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. I spent over an hour at this location admiring the views (both toward the Cathedral and in the opposite direction, toward the Mediterranean Sea). The image in today's entry is an HDR, composed of three bracketed exposures. The tiny black dots you see surrounding the Cathedral are swallows, which were in the hundreds, if not thousands, flying in the vicinity of La Seu. |
