![]() From June 18 to July 8, I was on vacation in Europe. I mentioned in the entry for June 17th that regular (i.e. every day) postings might not occur, and this turned out to be the case while I was traveling. However, beginning with tomorrow's entry, I am posting images retroactively to the day the image was captured. Just prior to leaving for Europe, I decided to bite the bullet and invest in a more professional digital SLR. I bought the Canon 5D, a 12.8 megapixel digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera body. What attracted me to the 5D was its 35.8 x 23.9 mm full-frame CMOS sensor; in other words, there is no field of view crop, such as the 1.6x crop factor in my other digital SLR, Canon Rebel XT. With the full-frame sensor and a 1.0 crop sensor, I was now able to use my Canon 17-40 f/4L lens to its full super wide-angle potential. Of course, the extra bump in resolution from 8MP (on the Rebel XT) to the 12.8 MP (on the Canon 5D) means that the prints would be more amazing than ever, especially the ones larger than 10 inches by 15 inches. I ended up carrying both the Canon Rebel XT and the Canon 5D with me to Europe. For the duration of the trip, I carried both cameras with lenses mostly everywhere I went. A lot of the times, I had both cameras hanging from my neck (usually the 5D was paired with the Canon 17-40 f/4L lens while the Rebel XT was paired with the Canon 100mm macro lens). I also had my tripod with me most of the time. I captured a lot of images with the intention of processing the shots as HDR images (click here for my HDR gallery), so a tripod was a necessity in most situations. Today's image was actually captured near the end of the trip (I didn't have a chance to photograph anything on June 18th from the airplane, as I was sitting in the center aisle, away from the windows). The image was shot with my Canon Rebel XT and Canon 17-40 f/4L lens, which shows my Canon 5D paired with the 100mm macro lens, attached to a tripod. The focus is on the viewfinder of the Canon 5D, through which I was photographing a magnificent palace. So enough about the technical details. What does all this stuff mean for you? It means you'll see amazing images from Europe in the coming days (and probably months, as I captured well over 8,000 images on this trip). And because most of the shots on this trip were captured with the Canon 5D, prints that you may order from this photoblog will look more spectacular than ever. Thus, beginning with the next entry, join me here at Erudite Expressions as I post images from my travels in Spain, France, and Italy. |
