![]() Today I woke up early and went with my family to the Georgia Dome to see my sister graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. The master of ceremonies for the event was Dr. Wayne Clough, President of Georgia Tech. He has led Georgia Tech since 1994, and he has done a number of great things for the Institute during his tenure. This was Clough's last commencement, as he is stepping down as president of Georgia Tech as of July 1, 2008 to serve as the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. The commencement lasted for over three hours. The Commencement Address was presented by Mr. Dean Kamen, President of DEKA Research and Development Corporation. The presentation of Bachelor's degree candidates was by the dean of the respective college, of which there are six. At the center of the stage there are seven banners. The center banner (in gold and white) is the logo of Georgia Institute of Technology. Then, going from left to right we have Georgia Tech's College of Computing, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, College of Architecture, College of Management, College of Sciences, and College of Engineering (by far the largest college at Georgia Tech). Every graduate in attendance heard his or her full name (i.e., first, middle, last) announced, which is the primary reason why the ceremony took a while to finish. As each graduate walked across the stage, he or she had the privilege and honour to shake Wayne Clough's hand. After the last graduate received his diploma, loud cheers emanated from a crowd of over 10,000. Ten minutes later, after the singing of the Alma Mater and the 'Ramblin' Wreck,' balloons descended upon the graduates and there was much rejoicing. My sister graduated summa cum laude (with highest honors) from Georgia Tech, in arguably one of the hardest majors at Georgia Tech. It is a monumental achievement, so a huge congratulations to her. |
