![]() The city of St. Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter the Great on May 27, 1703. St. Petersburg would go on to become the capital of the Russian Empire on May 8, 1713; it would serve as the capital for over two hundred years (from 1712-1728 and from 1732-1918). In 2003, St. Petersburg commemorated the three-hundredth anniversary of its founding. The fountains which are seen in today's image were built on the Neva Riva as part of the anniversary celebration. Since 2003, the fountains have been going off twice every single day: at noon and at midnight. The fountains are synchronized to music, and many tourists come to see them. The building seen on the left of this image is the Peter and Paul Fortress (Russian: Петропавловская крепость). The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia. The fortress was established by Peter the Great on May 16, 1703. The fortress actually lies on a small island on the Neva River. The fortress contains a number of buildings including the Peter and Paul Cathedral (built from 1712 to 1733, it has a 123 meter bell-tower and a gilded angel-topped cupola), where all Russian tsars from Peter I to Alexander III are interred. The inclusion of the Peter and Paul Fortress in this image has significance: music begins to trumpet and the fountains begin to dance right after a blast from a canon - located within the confines of the fortress - is heard. |
