I was in Boston for a total of eight days. Two of those days, I actually took trips away from the city. On one of these days, I took a tour to visit the grand city of Newport, Rhode Island. Wow, am I glad I went on this trip.

Newport, RI is known for its mansions. The Vanderbilts made Newport, RI their place of residence during the summer. Shown here is the façade of 'The Breakers.' It gets its name from the rough sea waves that are found in the Atlantic Ocean, which it overlooks. The Breakers is a National Historic Landmark, and is owned and operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County. Without a doubt, the Breakers is the most visited destination in the entire state of Rhode Island.

Designed by renowned architect Richard Morris Hunt, this 70-room mansion was constructed between 1893 and 1895. The total cost of construction was an astronomical seven million dollars, which would equate to well over two hundred million dollars today!
