Now, I know what you must be thinking: “Where the hell did Jake get the money to be going on exotic vacations?” Ha! I didn’t… though I probably shouldn’t be laughing … One of my best friends got married in St. Croix last week and he asked me to shoot his wedding! Congrats Charlie! I felt pretty damn honoured.

He and his wife kindly offered to cover my expenses for the trip down, and pay for my services too! Even though I totally would have done it for free. So I was basically paid to have an amazing time in St. Croix with my friends. Pretty sweet if you ask me. The venue for their wedding was absolute perfection.

Budget Diaries: The Hard Truth

When I left my corporate job behind, I left the luxury and dependability of a monthly pay-check behind too. Even though I’m 100% confident that I have enough money saved up to be able to tide me over until I have a consistent work-flow, I’ve had to be extremely mindful of my budget and I’m still trying to save wherever I can.

Even though I am a bit hard-headed I have to acknowledge that some people know more about certain things than I do. While it may not be as glamorous as travelling the world, photographing supermodels and working on your own time, some really great people work in the financial industry. My financial-advisor-turned-friend over at State Farm  gave me some really great advice to save money without resorting to trying to shave pennies off my grocery bill.

My First Real Gig! Shooting Interiors

When I told my mom I was quitting my job to be a photographer she looked at me like I was crazy. She legit looked like she was about to slap some sense into me. She asked me if I was sure, and asked if I had saved enough money to hold me over if I didn’t get any work. I assured her I had thought this through. I am a grown man after all. After a long lecture, she finally gave me her blessing. Phew!

She must have really believed in me, because thanks to my mom, I’m now officially a freelance photographer! Apparently one of her close friends runs an interior design firm and needed a photographer to compose photos for their local magazine. It was an amazing opportunity to showcase my skills (ahem) on a professional level. Thanks mom!
